Mary Marcella Allen, of Little Rock, passed away December 13, 2019, 29 days shy of her 92nd birthday. She was born January 11, 1928 in Morrilton, Arkansas to Joseph Homer Gray and Zena Erma Oliver Gray. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, John Herbert Allen. She is survived by son and daughter-in-law, David J. and Marietta Allen of Bryant and daughter and son-in-law, Sandra K. Allen and Michael L. Horton of Oakland, Oregon.
Ms. Marcella graduated from Little Rock Central High School in 1946. Her first job was as Elevator Operator at The Donaghey Building in downtown Little Rock. After attending Ouachita Baptist College for two years, she worked at Bell Telephone Company until Sandra was born.
She was a devoted Christian who spent many years teaching Sunday School to the 4 and 5 years olds at several Southern Baptist churches in the Little Rock area. She most recently was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. After retirement from The Hartford Insurance Company, she and John spent winters on the Gulf Coast of Florida where they enjoyed the sunshine, made many new friends and were very active in the Estero Baptist Church. She loved history, kept a notebook log of the many books she read, did beautiful cross-stitch embroidery and never said "No" to family, friends, and neighbors when they asked for her help. Her friends insisted she resembled a hummingbird as she flitted about from one good deed to another.
Services will be held on her 92nd birthday, Saturday, January 11, 2020 at 11:00 am at Little Rock Funeral Home , 8801 Knoedl Court (NW corner of I-630 and Barrow Road), officiated by Rev. Rick Jaggars. The private interment will be with John at the Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery in North Little Rock.
