Marietta C. Gutierrez, a beloved daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away on January 11, 2025, at the age of 96. Born on December 28, 1928, Marietta lived a life rich in love, laughter, and dedication to her family and community.
She proudly graduated from Little Rock High School in 1945 and took an active role in organizing her graduating class reunions for numerous years. While she enjoyed a professional life, her heart truly belonged to her family. Marietta’s love story was unlike any other; she married Thomas Short Jr., the love of her life, and together they shared 21 wonderful years. Their love was a one-of-a-kind tale, which was tragically interrupted when Thomas passed away at the young age of 48. Before his departure, he ensured that Marietta would be cared for, introducing her to his friend, Frank Gutierrez. Marietta and Frank went on to share an incredible 43 years of marriage, filled with joy and companionship.
Marietta spent many years serving as a systems analyst for Continental Baking Company. Her passion for her work was mirrored in her love for people; she was a social butterfly, cultivating friendships that spanned decades. Many of her friends affectionately referred to her as "mom," a testament to her nurturing spirit. She had a caring personality and her dedication to hard work was evident in everything she did.
Marietta had a zest for life that shone brightly in all her pursuits. She loved to travel. During their younger years, Marietta and Frank would dance the night away, creating memories that would last a lifetime. In her spare time, she enjoyed her hobbies of—playing Sudoku, crocheting, and cross stitching. She was deeply involved with Sylvan Hills Extension Homemakers Club (EHC). She served as Vice President, President elect, and State President of EHC. Her involvement in her community brought her much joy. Marietta was a proud choc-a-holic, always ending her day with Wheel of Fortune, a good book, and a glass of Chocovine Chocolate Wine.
For decades Marietta was an active parishioner of First Lutheran Church of Little Rock and later became a member of Grace Lutheran Church. The last four years she was a member of First United Methodist Church of North Little Rock. Marietta faithfully watched all three church services online every Sunday.
Marietta is survived by her daughter Rita Newman, grandson Brad Newman (Erin), granddaughter Melany Nelson (Lucas), half-sister Alexandria Smith, great-grandson Lane Newman, and great-granddaughter Mallory Stacionis. She was preceded in death by her mother Margie Garrison, father Jasper Garrison, first husband Thomas Short Jr., second husband Frank Gutierrez, brother Justin Garrison and her dog Buddy.
Her life was a mosaic of beautiful memories, warm encounters, and cherished relationships. As we honor Marietta, let us remember her favorite phrase, "so be it," which perfectly encapsulates her vibrant spirit and acceptance of life’s journey. While she will be dearly missed, her legacy of love and kindness will continue to resonate through those she touched. A visitation will be held on February 4, 2025, at 10:00 AM, followed by a memorial service at 11:00 AM, both at the First United Methodist Church of North Little Rock Arkansas.
To honor her life donations can be made to First United Methodist Church of North Little Rock missions.
