Louise Vandegrift

Louise Nesbitt Brinningstall Vandegrift (Sarge) has traveled through this land for 94 years and has moved on to another land to join loved ones who have gone on before her. Lou was born June 24, 1921 to Raymond Roy and Rebecca May Strawn Nesbitt in Rison, Arkansas and spent most of her childhood days there. Her family moved to the Little Rock area in a flatbed truck when she was around 15 years of age, her family consisting of mom and dad, of course, two sisters and four brothers.

She and her first husband, Kenneth, acquired some property in the Sylvan Hills area and constructed their modest home, moving in to the house in 1944, where they raised two daughters. After Kenneth's death she married a longtime family friend, Bud (Van) Vandegrift and they remained in the original home until December 31, 2015. Because of health reasons they moved to an assisted living facility where she peacefully slipped into her heavenly home on April 15, 2016.

During her time on this Earth Lou enjoyed cooking for large gatherings for family, church, and other areas where she could serve. She knew the Lord and taught many children through Sunday school and Vacation Bible school programs. She was a member of the Sylvan Hills Eastern Star, enjoyed Bluegrass shows and camping. Many years were spent camping at Lake Bennett (Wholly Hollow State Park) in Greenbrier and in later years at Toad Suck Park, Conway, where their favorite sites were A1 and A6. She was happy to share a favorite recipe when asked with directions such as: a pinch of this or a dab of that.

Lou was preceded in death by C. Kenneth Brinningstall; grandson, Kenneth J. Cossey; two sisters and three brothers. She is survived by her devoted husband of 54 years, Giles V. (Bud) Vandegrift; three daughters, Betty Thornquist (Jack) of Romance, Peggy Petray (George) of Scott and Evelyn Agee (Larry) of Foley, Alabama; one brother, Boyd Nesbitt (Shirley) of Winslow and one sister-in-law, Dorothy Nesbitt of Sherwood; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

A special THANKS goes to all who helped care and prayed for her in her later years, especially the staff at Stone Haven Assisted Living in Maumelle. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Baptist Health Hospice, 11900 Colonel Glenn Rd., Little Rock, AR 72210.
