One of God?s greatest singers, Louis Anderson Jeffers, born June 1, 1923 went home to be with his Lord in the early morning hours of August 29, 2007 at the age of 84. Just last week, he and his wife Marileigh celebrated their 60th Wedding anniversary with family and friends and that same family surrounded him as he entered Heaven with a brand-new body, completely healed and healthy.
His surrender to Christ in 1948 led to the salvation of three generations of his family. As the patriarch of a devoted and affectionate family, he established his home as a place of acceptance and love. Gatherings at his home for holidays and birthdays were a common occurrence, and his leadership, hugs, and affirmation to his family during these gatherings were reminders of his unchanging and relentless love for them.
He had been told often that he could have been a professional musician, but he chose instead to begin a music ministry at Bayou Meto Baptist Church. He led singings and choirs in countless revivals across the state serving with numerous evangelists in the 1970?s and 1980?s. His voice was deep, strong, and clear and will never be forgotten by those who heard it. He now is able to lift his voice, strong once again, to sing in the very place he sang about, and to the Savior he loved.
He was a charter member and a deacon of Bayou Meto Baptist Church.
After honeymooning in Arkansas at the Buffalo River, Louie decided to raise his family in this great state, instead of East St. Louis, Missouri, where he and Marileigh were raised. He and his family made annual trips for over 40 years to the Buffalo River and have included hundreds of friends in the camping, singing, horseshoes, card games and fellowship.
He retired from the U.S. Post Office after delivering mail on city and rural routes for 32 years. He was known as the ?Singing Mailman? because the song in his heart came out daily as he walked his Jacksonville delivery route or drove his mail jeep through North Pulaski.
His survivors include his wife of 60 years, Marileigh Jeffers, son David Jeffers (Susan), son Bobby Jeffers and daughter Becky Russell (Ralph), grandchildren Aundra Boeckman (Mitch), Amanda Browning (Ryan), Bobby Allen Jeffers, Nathan Jeffers, Andrew Jeffers, Casey Russell, and Abby Russell, and one great-granddaughter Emma Browning. He was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Goldie Jeffers, his sisters Irene Kissling (Mel) and Mildred Chambers (Thomas), infant son Robert Jeffers, and a granddaughter Jae Lynn Russell.
To honor Louis, the family asks that memorial gifts be made to the ?Jae Lynn Russell Educational Scholarship? c/o Arkansas Community Foundation, 1400 West Markham, Suite 206, Little Rock, Arkansas 72201.
