Louis Flickinger

Louis Elliot Flickinger, of North Little Rock, died September 17, 2019.  He was born February 17, 1946 in Little Rock to the late Louis Flickinger and Marie Wade Flickinger.

Louis Elliot Flickinger was a Mason for over 35 years, having received the Master Mason degree on his birthday in 1984. He received all of the degrees of the Symbolic Lodge at Mt. Sinai No.749 in Levy, AR. He later affiliated with Big Rock No.633 as a dual member, and served both Mt. Sinai and Big Rock as Worshipful Master. When Mt. Sinai merged into Sylvan Hills No. 754, his membership transferred there. He was a dual member of Big Rock and Sylvan Hills at the time of his death.

He also pursued the degrees of the York Rite and Scottish Rite. He was a member of Union Chapter No. 2 and Iris NO. 151 of Royal Arch Masons; Occidental Council No. 1 of Royal & Select Masters; and Hugh de Payens Commandery No. 1 of Knights Templar. He was a fourth generation Knight templar.

He was a 32nd Degree member of the Scottish Rite bodies of Little Rock, and had been honored with the Degree of Knight Commander of the Court of Honor. He was a third generation Scottish Rite member.

Elliot was a prolific writer on Masonic subjects, and a perfectionist in the ritual work of all of the bodies of Freemasonry. But, perhaps his greatest contribution is that it was his vision that saved the oldest Chapter of Royal Arch Masons in Arkansas from going defunct. In 1993, the year before its 150th anniversary, Union Chapter No. 2 was dying. The Chapter had very few members attending, and could not meet its financial obligations. When Elliot became aware of this situation, he determined that the Royal Arch Chapter founded by none other than Albert Pike in 1844, should not be allowed to fold. He recruited several other Royal Arch Masons, and together they created a Sesquicentennial celebration that has buoyed Union Chapter No.2 from that time to the present day.

Albert Pike wrote: “What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us; what we have done for others and the world remains and is immortal.”

Elliot’s contributions are the latter.
