Lorraine Buchanan, 78, of North Little Rock died Friday, March 23, 2012 in the care of Arkansas Hospice at St. Vincent Medical System in Little Rock. Born June 8, 1933 in Chicago, she was the daughter of the late John and Helen Szybowski Szott. She was married to Robert Buchanan in 1955.
Laurie was retired from the Central Arkansas Library System where she was acquisitions clerk and a lover of books. Although reared on the South Side, she was a lifelong fan of the North Side Chicago Cubs. Laurie saw them play from Wrigley Field to Philadelphia to Phoenix. Laurie loved to travel, having visited all 50 states plus most provinces in Canada and a three-year stay in Hawaii.
Married for 57 years, she was a quiet and reserved woman. Laurie's family was her life. That included three sons, Keith and wife Karen of Fort Worth, Texas, Kevin and wife Cate of Dallas, Texas, and Kelly of Richmond, Virginia. In addition to her sons and daughters-in-law, she leaves three grandsons, Kyle and Kendall of Fort Worth and Alex of Dallas. She also is survived by a sister, Patricia Figurski of Crown Point, Indiana.
A member of Immaculate Conception parish of North Little Rock for 40 years, her funeral Mass will be concelebrated by her pastor, the Rev. Tom Elliott and the Rev. Thomas Keller of Carlisle at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Visitation will be 6:00 p.m. Tuesday followed by the Rosary at 7:00 p.m. at North Little Rock Funeral Home. Burial will be in Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery in Sherwood.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Arkansas, 201 Markham Center Drive, Little Rock 72205; Helping Hand, 1601 Marshall Street, Little Rock 72202; or St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, P.O. Box M, Carlisle, Arkansas 72024.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Lonoke Nursing and Convalescent Center who made her feel at home for nearly three years.
