Leonard Spitzer

A celebration of the life of Leonard Saul Spitzer, age 94, who died November 11, 2011 will be held on Saturday, December 10 at 10:00 a.m. at the Rebsamen Park Golf Course in Little Rock.
Len was born in Chicago, Illinois to Sam and Anna Spitzer and raised in Oak Park, Illinois with his brother, Jerry. In their childhood, summers were always spent at their summer home in Glenn, Michigan, a past that held many fond memories.
During his childhood, Len became well known as a Golf Champion, winning the Chicago City Title at the age of 16. Following graduation from Oak Park High School, he went to college at the University of Texas, where he was the Captain of the Golf team and was the Southwest Conference Golf Champion.
Following college, he married Sidney Stifft of Little Rock. Although Sidney died at a very young age, he always remembered her as the "nicest person he ever knew".
During World War II, Lt. Spitzer was a bombardier in the Fifth Air Force, flying 35 combat missions over Europe with missions deep into Germany and Romania. He was particularly proud of his War service and those he flew with.
Upon returning from his wartime service, he lived in Chicago for a brief period until he moved to Little Rock in 1949. Soon thereafter, he began teaching at Pulaski Heights Junior High and became Principal. For the next few years, he was Principal at Forest Heights Junior High, Hall High School and Parkview High School, which he opened and ran for several years until his retirement.
During his life, golf had always been his primary interest, with many Championships to his record.
He is survived by his son, Len Spitzer, Jr. and his wife, Katy of Oakland, California; his daughter, Sidney Spitzer of Little Rock; his grandchildren, Jill Ward, Robyn Hennessey, Jerry Coelho and Nick Coelho; and one great grandson, Ronan Ward. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sidney Spitzer, his 2nd wife, Juanita Wheeler, son, Sam Spitzer and step-son, Chris Spitzer.
