Leon Smith

The family of Leon Smith would like to thank you for honoring his memory by your presence today.

Lenard "Leon" Smith, 75, of Woodson, went to be with our Lord and Savior on Wednesday, June 17, 2015. He was born at home to James "Garfield", and Essie (McGill) Smith. He is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, three sisters, and a grandson.

He is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Lynn Burke Smith, a daughter, Desiree' Bell (David), three step-daughters, Sandy Skinner, Sharon Houlette (Dave), Shirley Harris (Rob). He has thirteen surviving grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, four brothers, one sister, and many extended family and friends.

Leon spent his boyhood working on the family farm. He graduated, in 1957, from Fuller High School. His first job was at the Arkansas Gazette. During his lifetime, he also worked for Knight's Inventory Service as a crew supervisor, Safeway, and Associated Management from which he retired after more than 20 years. Leon then returned to his first love, gardening. He and Lynn purchased property just down the road from his childhood home. They joined a group of farmers and became part of the Home Grown Market, which set up at various locations in central Arkansas to sell their harvest. He is known by many for his extraordinary gardening skills.

A member of Lone Pine Missionary Baptist Church in Hensley, Leon served faithfully as long as he was able. He could be seen bringing devotionals on Sunday mornings, driving the van, singing in the choir, serving as usher, and helping with Vacation Bible School. He had a deep love of The Lord and his fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. The children at church were overjoyed with his pockets full of Tootsie Rolls and other candies.

His life was filled with many great experiences and people, for which he was truly thankful. He loved a smiling face, fishing, children, and dessert (especially if it was chocolate).

"Keep your fork, the best is yet to come!"
