Lena Miller

Lena Mae Dickey Miller, 93, died in Little Rock on February 26, 2012. A daughter of the late Fannie Hudson and Andy Dickey, she was one of six children born to the couple in Sparkman, Ark., a small Dallas County community. All of her siblings a" Felix, Doyle, Harry, Mabel and Etheleen a" preceded her in death.

For more than three decades, Lena was an assistant to Dr. J.B. Cross, beginning at the Cook Eye Clinic in downtown Little Rock and continuing throughout the years as his practice relocated and expanded with new partners.

Dr. Cross once remarked that he and Lena had embarked upon their professional careers together, saying "Neither Lena nor I knew what we were doing, but we figured it out. An added bonus was that Lena adopted me and my family." Long after her retirement, Lena continued to cherish her visits and lunches with Dr. Cross.

Dr. Cross and his family were not the only Arkansans to be "adopted" by Lena Mae who had no children of her own. She also took under her wings Little Rock resident Judy Lee Adams. "I was very lucky to have had two mothers," said Adams, "one a birth mother who died more than 43 years ago, and then my mother's best friend, Lena Mae, who had known me since birth and became my second mother and grandmother to my children."

In addition to her "daughter" Judy Adams and husband Don, Lena Mae is survived by three grandchildren: Ashley Anderson; Brian Adams and wife Angela; Blake Adams and wife Riley; and five great-grandchildren a" Annie, Lillie, Noah, Maddie and Hutch. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

A family graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 2 at Delamar Cemetery under the direction of Ruggles-Wilcox Funeral Home of Arkadelphia. A service and celebration of Lena's life will follow at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church, 4823 Woodlawn, Little Rock.

The family wishes to express its sincere appreciation to Dr. Morgan Sauer and the staff of Hospice Home Care on Bowman Road in Little Rock for the loving care given to Lena ensuring her comfort and peace of mind during the final weeks of her life.
