Lena Collier McSpadden, age 91, died Sunday, March 30, 2008, in a Hot Springs hospital.
Mrs. McSpadden was born December 9, 1916, in Monticello, Arkansas to James Robert Sparks and Annie Elizabeth Patty Sparks. Later the family moved to Woodruff County where she was married in 1932 to Clyde W. Collier of Augusta. To this union was born three sons, Franklin, Vernon, and Martin Collier. She helped her husband in farming, and later when they owned a grocery store in Augusta.
After a divorce in the early 1950?s, she married Neal McSpadden, a native of Batesville, Arkansas. They lived in North Little Rock, Arkansas, and owned McSpadden?s Jewelry in the Donaghey Building in downtown Little Rock for many years. During this time she earned her G.E.D. and also because a licensed beautician. She owned Lena?s Beauty salon on Broadway Avenue in North Little Rock during the late 1960?s and early 1970?s. Mr. McSpadden died in 1976 and she remained a widow until her death, continuing to live in North Little Rock where she was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
When her health began to fail, she moved to Hot Springs to be near her youngest son, Martin. She lived first at Crown Trace Villa Retirement Home, and was currently living at Garrett Manor Retirement Home.
Besides her parents and husband, she was predeceased by two sons, Franklin and Vernon Collier, and Franklin?s wife, Linda, all of Augusta, Arkansas. She was also predeceased by all her siblings; Claude Sparks, Arthur Sparks, Ollie Sparks, Lydia Phillips, Mae Smith, Wilma Conner, Ada Moore, Velma Williams, and Verna Ransom


She is survived by one son, Martin Collier and his wife, Alice of Hot Springs; a daughter-in-law, Margaret Collier of Augusta, Arkansas; six grandchildren; Dr. Steve Collier (Susan) of Augusta, Trish Roberson (Steve) of Little Rock, Kay Walsh (Mike) of Annapolis, Maryland, Clyde Collier (Carla) of Edmond, Oklahoma, James Collier (Donna) of Loveland, Colorado, and Alison Fendley (Mike) of Hot Springs. She is also survived by twenty-two great grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Services will be held at Calvary Baptist Church, 5025 Lynch Drive in North Little Rock on Wednesday at 2:00 P.M. Rev. Robert McDaniel will officiate with Mike Fendley assisting.
Visitation will be on Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at North Little Rock Funeral Home.
Pallbearers are Steve Collier, James Collier, Clyde Collier, Steve Roberson, Ken Johnson, and Wayne Ball.
Honorary pallbearers are Chad Roberson, Mike Fendley, Seth Fendley, Mike Walsh, David Robinson, and Bill Wagley.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Calvary Baptist Church.
