LaVerne Williams, 83, of Little Rock, passed away on Thursday, May 8, 2008. Born December 4, 1924 in Tichnor, Arkansas, the daughter of John Allen and Ethel Bitely Corbitt, she was a member of Redfield United Pentecostal Church. She was a past Worthy Matron of Eastern Star in Washington, D.C.
During WWII she obtained her pilot's license with hopes of joining the Women's Air Corps. She retired after 42 years with the Internal Revenue Service. LaVerne loved gardening, cooking, crocheting and traveling and was an avid cookbook collector. She was a wonderful caregiver, graciously giving of her time and talents in helping others. Some would say she gave to a fault.
Mrs. Williams is survived by her husband, Robert Williams; brothers, Roger Corbitt and wife, Barbara of Tichnor; Reggie Corbitt and wife, Mary Louise of Little Rock and Jeff Corbitt and wife, Renee of Cabot; and sisters, Velma Brown of Hot Springs and Jeanette Joseph of Shreveport, Louisiana. Also surviving are a host of nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Orville Corbitt and sisters, Mildred Corbitt and Ina Hampton.
The family wishes to thank the staff, caregivers and physicians at Good Shepherd's Rogers Building, UAMS Geriatrics Department, Woodland Hills and Arkansas Hospice.
There will be visitation this evening, Friday, from 6-8 p.m. at Redfield United Pentecostal Church. The Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 10 at the church, officiated by Rev. Phillip Heddon. Burial will follow in Hockenberry Cemetery in Tichnor.
