Larry Douglas Shields aka "Big Doug" as he was locally known by friends and colleagues was born in Joplin, Missouri on October 4th, 1965 to parents Larry Wallace Shields and Lowanna Sue Ruddell-Shields. Doug came into this world with a big heart full of love, the courage of a fierce lion, and the loyalty of a Golden Retriever.
He will always be remembered for being an extremely hard worker. In fact, to his children, he was known as "Mr. Make it Happen". He was a super laid-back and down-to-earth kinda guy. He would get along with anyone from any walk of life and would give you the shirt on his back if you needed it. A songbird; he had the voice of an angel, always lulling his children with music or surprising co-workers with his natural talents. Even athletically he would succeed in his youth with sports such as wrestling and Football. Doug was a natural comedian, his Kindergarten teacher once said that he liked to trip himself purposely to make others laugh. He always found humor in every scenario that life would present to him.
Doug was an amazing chef and food was definitely his love language. Whether it was a homecooked gourmet recipe or just a Hershey's chocolate bar under his cranky teenage daughter's door. His ability to make you feel loved and cared for using food will be immensely missed. Doug loved animals and babies and in return, they all gravitated towards him and loved him just as much. He would be happiest in nature and loved to bond with his family over activities such as fishing, hunting, or just hanging out and enjoying God's beautiful creation. He was a very intuitive soul who always knew how to keep calm in any tough situation. Sadly, Doug (58) left us with heavy hearts in the early morning of January 24, 2024. He was the rock of his family and will continue to be cherished deeply.
He is proceeded in death by his father, Larry Wallace Shields, and is survived by his mother Sue Shields, his siblings Jeff, Todd, and Robin Shields, his wife Lisa Sue Musil-Shields, his children Stephanie Nichole Shields, Treyson Lee Shields, Cara Isabel Shields, and Kessa Sue Shields and his nine grandchildren Jarison Huntsman, Drue Huntsman, Lathen Huntsman, Adrian Gilmore, Demi Shields, Mariana Shields-Vargas, Nikolai Shields, Lucia Clinton and William Clinton.
Visitation will be from 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM on Saturday, February 3, 2024, at Smith Sherwood Funeral Home (7700 Hwy 107) with a funeral service following at 2:00 PM.
