Larry David Milne, 81, of Little Rock, passed away October 3, 2022. Born in Axtell, Kansas to Richard and Daisy Milne, he was valedictorian of his high school graduating class, earned his B.S. in Pharmacy at the University of Kansas in 1963 and his Doctorate of Philosophy in Medicinal Chemistry in 1970 at the University of Iowa. Dr. Milne served on the faculty of the Pharmacy College at the University of South Carolina, receiving the Outstanding Pharmacist of the Year Award in 1975.
In January 1977, he was selected as the second Dean of the College of Pharmacy at UAMS as the youngest and ultimately the longest-serving active Dean of a pharmacy college in the United States. He was instrumental in transforming the College of Pharmacy curriculum to include more patient care instruction. He led the successful drive to obtain and establish the Poison and Drug information Center which offered around-the-clock service for all of Arkansas. Dean Milne and the faculty led the way nationally to ensure that the Pharm.D. was available to graduates holding the bachelor’s degree and was affordable and accessible to practicing pharmacists wishing to return to school. Dean Milne became the first faculty member in the College of Pharmacy to serve as Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Research Administration, a position he held until his retirement in 2012.
He is survived by his loving wife, Phyllis Milne; Susan Milne, mother of his sons Todd David Milne and Gannon Stuart Milne (Wendy), daughter, Nicole Parker (Larry); and grandchildren, Wilson David Milne, Lawson Kyle McIntire, Olivia Christine Parker, and Caitlyn Ann Parker.
A memorial service for Dr. Milne is being planned in November on the campus of UAMS, specific details to be provided at a future date.
