Kevin Mayes, 59, of North Little Rock, Arkansas went home to be with the Lord on July 5, 2021, after a hard-fought battle with complications due to Covid-19. He passed away peacefully with his family by his side. He was born on January 15, 1962 in Little Rock, Arkansas to Glenda Jane (Lockhart) Mayes and Wilburn Donald Mayes. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Debbie (Miller) Mayes; son, Hayden; daughter, Madysen; mother, Jane; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Betty and John Miller; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He is preceded in death by his father Donald; stepfather, Harvey Reeves; and sister, Donna Jane (D.J) Mayes.
Kevin, the love of Debbie’s life, whom he called “Grace,” remembered every birthday and anniversary with flowers and would surprise her with special gifts throughout the year. He always recognized when she had a hard day and knew she needed a margarita date night. Kevin was especially proud of his children. Hayden, whom he always greeted with “Hey Cowboy” was his “partner in crime” and they spent time together every Sunday shooting pool. Madysen, whom he called Baby Cakes, was his sassy little princess who he took on Father/Daughter dates for breakfast at McDonalds or Waffle House. He woke her each morning with butterfly kisses (batting his eyelashes on her cheek). They often frustrated each other because they were so much alike.
Kevin was a country boy at heart. He loved to grill any meat, drink beer, and was particular about cutting his grass. He was an avid fan of the Razorback football and basketball teams and cheered them on while cussing the officials for many bad calls. Many nights he would leave the house with any willing passengers to “drive the loop” looking for deer. And he was always the person you could call any time of the day or night and he would be there to help.
He could make a quick trip anywhere last at least a few hours. Anytime you rode with him he never took the most direct route, whether it was asphalt, gravel or mud, he took every possible road to make the trip last excruciatingly long. We were many times frustrated at the lengths of those trips but will now cherish the time we spent together.
He also had an unexpected side to him as he was ever the jokester, picked on everyone young and old, and wrote great one-liners for all his Facebook posts. He collected ceramic roosters, fixed things the “Kevin-way” and loved concocting meals from whatever he had on hand.
He was the Director of Maintenance at EOS Trucking in North Little Rock and spent the last 25+ years in the trucking industry in various positions. Over the years he especially liked getting together with Quentin, Pete and Randy for so called “board meetings” and for the annual White River fishing trips with many trucking friends.
Kevin was definitely a one-of-a-kind guy and will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the medical staff in the ICU at Baptist Conway. During his month long stay at the hospital, he received the utmost compassion and care.
Honorary pallbearers are: Quentin Markland, Paul McGinness, Joe Earhart, Donny Stewart, Marshall Shipley, Brad Beech, and Harvey Beech.
Visitation will be 10:00AM-12:00PM Friday, July 9 at Immaculate Heart of Mary with a rosary following at 12:00PM. Memorial Mass will follow the rosary at 1:00PM.
