Kenneth Ray Scott, 74, of Sherwood went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, December 26, 2006 after a long battle with cancer. He was born in Mayflower, Arkansas to the late John Scott and Carrie Scott. Ken graduated from Jacksonville High School and served aboard the USS Purdy for a tour around the world that he jokingly said ?he didn?t have to pay for.? After getting out of the Navy he went to the University of Arkansas where he received his BA in agriculture and did a year post graduate work in floriculture at Ohio State University. He went to work for the Cooperate Extension Service where he was encouraged to go back to the University of Arkansas for a MS degree in Horticulture. Ken loved to wood carve and shared that interest with youth around the state. He taught classes at War Eagle and Silver Dollar City until his health would no longer allow him to do so. In addition to woodcarving, Ken enjoyed mission trips to Mexico, Brazil and Germany and serving on the Arkansas Baptist Disaster Relief team. With the help of Dr. Gerald Klingaman they established the Arkansas Nurseryman?s Association. In his last year with the Extension Service he was able to help start the Arkansas Flower and Garden show and stayed active in it even after retirement. Ken recently received the 2006 Distinguished Alumni award from the U of A Department of Horticulture.
Ken was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Judith Elaine Scott and his parents, John and Carrie Scott. He is survived by his wife, Marine; two daughters, Joyce Harris (Eddie), of North Little Rock and Cynthia Rollins, of Sherwood; five grandchildren that he loved dearly, Michael Wayne Holland II, Amanda Marie Ragan (Danial), Kenneth Ray Mize, Victoria Lynn Rollins and Megan Elaine Rollins, all of Sherwood; two brothers, Elzie Scott (Betty) of Ozark, Missouri and Delbert Scott (Darriel) of Sherwood; three sisters, Wilma Smith (Andrew) of Jacksonville, Norma Thompson (Tom) of Hot Springs and Brenda Shurmantine (John) of Wellington, Missouri and a host of nieces and nephews.
