Johnny Stephen Jones, 63, passed away over the Labor Day weekend after ongoing declining health. Preceded in death by his father, Carlton Leon (Dick) Jones, he is survived by his mother, Zella Mae Jones; son, J.R. Courtright (Cheri); daughter, Jessica Trotter; two grandsons, three granddaughters and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by three sisters, Dorothy Youso, Paula Daniel and Carla Farnam, all of Little Rock.
Johnny put his faith in the Lord at the age of eight and united with Landmark Baptist Church in Gould, Arkansas. He was baptized by his father who was the pastor. He later became a member of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in Little Rock.
After his father's death in 1956, he became the "little man" of the house at the age of 8, helping to care for his sisters. Johnny had a loving heart for family, friends and especially children. He also loved animals and could never become a hunter because of his reluctance to shoot a deer.
He participated in Boy Scouts of America, achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. He graduated from Arkansas School for the Deaf in 1968 as Salutatorian of his class. He was quite an athlete, achieving many awards in football as quarterback and in basketball throughout his high school years. He was selected for Kruger's 30th All-America Team and the National Fraternal Society of the Deaf Honor Squad. After graduation, he attended Gallaudet College in Washington, D.C. Johnny continued to be active in sports as an adult with the deaf community in the Little Rock area.
He was employed as a linotype operator for several years, but ultimately worked with the U.S. Postal Service until his retirement. Johnny struggled for many years with schizophrenia which severely disrupted his life at times, but he has now forever found peace in the presence of his Lord.
Services will be held Sunday, September 11 at 12:30 p.m. at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. Bob Slagley. Memorials may be made to Antioch Deaf Fellowship, 5300 Stagecoach Rd., Little Rock, AR 72204.
