Johnnie Ruth Elza Qualls, of Little Rock, passed away Sunday, May 7, 2006. Born August 21, 1928 in El Dorado, Arkansas, she was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Edith Elza and a sister, Geraldine Alderson. She graduated from El Dorado High School and attended Central Baptist College for Women in Conway. She was a member of Pulaski Heights Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School.
When her children were in school, Johnnie served as a leader in both Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts. She served as Past President of Jefferson Elementary PTA, Forest Heights Junior High School PTA and the Little Rock PTA Council. She was a member and Past President of Baptist Health Medical Center and Baptist Health Rehabilitation Institute Auxiliary; a member and Past President of Brady Home Extension Club and a member of the Arkansas Glasshoppers Club. Johnnie worked at the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette as Bridal Editor and retired from Baptist Medical Health Center after seventeen and a half years as Director of Volunteers.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Wames Qualls; a daughter, Shirley McCone of Conway; son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Rebecca Qualls of Vilonia; five grandchildren, Meredith McCone of Springdale and Jason and Jennifer Qualls of Little Rock and Craig Dunn and Holly Dunn Smith of Vilonia; and great-grandchildren, Angela Dunn and Madisyn Smith of Vilonia. Also surviving are a brother, Louis Elza, of El Dorado, Arkansas and a sister, Mary Alice Chapman of St. Louis, Missouri.
Visitation will be this evening, Tuesday, May 9, 2006, from 6-8 p.m. at Pulaski Heights Baptist Church, 2200 Kavanaugh Blvd., Little Rock, with services set for 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 10, 2006 at Pulaski Heights Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Forest Hills Memorial Park, Alexander. Pallbearers will be Dwane Treat, Dick Browning, Jimmy Harrell, Terry Barnhill, Jake Clements and Hugh V. Alderson. Honorary Pallbearers will be Past Potentates of Scimitar Shrine.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Pulaski Heights Baptist Church; the Scimitar Shrine Memorial Fund, #1 Scimitar Circle, Little Rock, AR 72209, or to a charity of your choice.
