John Warren

John H. Warren, 82, formerly of Springfield, Missouri, died December 03, 2013 in Little Rock, Arkansas. An emeritus professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, he moved to Little Rock in 2010.
Dr. Warren earned a baccalaureate from Illinois State University; his M. Ed. Degree from the University of Missouri, Columbia; and a doctorate from Boston University. The recipient of an Outstanding Senior Award, he graduated magna cum laude from Illinois State University, and later was appointed a Gregory Scholar at the Kappa Delta Pi, Gamma Theta Upsilon, and Phi Delta Kappa honorary fraternities. He was active in numerous professional organizations while at the University of Wisconsin, City University of New York, and other institutions where he taught. Among other responsibilities during his tenure at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Dr. Warren served on the University Faculty Senate, as Director of the Reading Center and Clinic, as Chair of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, and President of the Clark County Chapter of the International Reading Association.
Initially, he was an elementary school teacher in Illinois and on Luzon in the Philippines, developing close bonds with many students that lasted until the time of his death. A published writer in the field of reading pedagogy, Dr. Warren was listed in Who's Who in the West, Leaders in Education, and Dictionary of International Biography. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Springfield, and a strong supporter of the Baptist World Alliance, Baptist History and Heritage Society, the Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty, and the Ruth School (Baptist) in Bucharest, Romania. Scholarships were established by Dr. Warren through Arkansas Baptist Foundation at Williams Baptist College in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas; Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas; and Missouri Baptist University in St. Louis, Missouri.
Born January 23, 1931 at Normal, Illinois he was the son of Almer and Pearle Stemm Warren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and a stepmother, and is survived by a niece, Patti Morgan of West Plains, Missouri and two nephews, Michael Ashbrook of West Plains, Missouri and Steve Powell of Crawfordsville, Indiana.
At Dr. Warren's request, his body will be cremated. A service of remembrance will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, December 9, at FoxRidge Chenal Assisted Living Facility. The service will be led by Arkansas Baptist Foundation. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 525 South Avenue, Springfield, Missouri 65806-3193.
