Dr. John E. Pauly, age 92, of Little Rock, died on February 9, 2020. He was born in Elgin, Illinois, the son of Edward J. and Gladys Myhre Pauly. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Dola Thompson Pauly; two daughters, Dr. Susan E. Pauly and husband, Dr. Steve Dew; Kathleen Duke and her husband, James Duke; and a son, Mark E. Pauly and wife, Laura Pauly. He has six grandchildren, Rebecca Williams, Hannah and Sarah Pauly, Craig Pauly, Elle and Emma Duke. There are also three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Mary Pauly, their oldest son, Stephen, and his brother, Robert W. Pauly.
Dr. Pauly served in the U.S. Navy from 1945-1947 and received an honorable discharge. He received a BS degree from Northwestern University and then MS and PhD degrees from Loyola University. He served on the faculties of the Chicago Medical School and the Tulane University School of Medicine. His final appointment was at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in 1967, where he served as the Chairman of the Department of Anatomy (1967-1983), head of the Department of Physiology and Biophysics (1978-1980), Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Sponsored Research as well as Associate Dean of the UAMS Graduate School (1983-1992). Dr. Pauly was also a Visiting Professor of Anatomy at Kuwait University (1993-1994) and at the University of Nevada (1996). He became Professor Emeritus at UAMS in 1995.
He was author or co-author of more than 125 scientific articles, three editions of a textbook of human microscopic anatomy, six volumes on chronobiology as well as a history for the first 100 years of the American Association of Anatomists. He was also the Editor of Advances in Anatomy, Embryology and Cell Biology for 15 years, the Editor of the American Journal of Anatomy for 12 years and a member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Chronobiology for 10 years and was a member of numerous other scientific and honorary societies.
Dr. Pauly was the recipient of many awards, including the Bronze Award of the Illinois State Medical Society, two Certificates of Merit from the American Medical Association, the Lederle Medical Faculty Award, and both the Centennial Award and the Henry Gray Award of the American Association of Anatomists. He was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In 2005 he was selected as a member of the UAMS College of Medicine Hall of Fame, the highest honor bestowed by the College of Medicine.
In retirement, he was a member of the Civil Air Patrol where at various times he served as Director of Aerospace Education, Director of Safety, a Mission Pilot, an Instructor Pilot, a Check Pilot and the Chief of Staff for the Arkansas Wing of the Quiet Birdmen.
