John William McDonald

John William McDonald of Hot Springs, Arkansas, passed away on May 25, 2023 at his home. John was born on December 10, 1950 to Roy and Guin McDonald in Little Rock, Arkansas. After graduating from Little Rock Central High School in 1968, he went on to study business at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock where he was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity.

John began working in his early teens at his family's poultry market. After high school he began his venture into men's retail clothing where he developed his love for fashion. He worked for several years at Phillips Men Store. He then began his first venture owning his own business and clothing store. In the early 80's, John started McDonald ATV. His son, Jason, worked with him there as an adult. Once this company was up and running John decided to move to San Antonio and opened both a TCBY and a gift store. While living between the two cities he had his trusted friend and general manager, Tony Runions, taking care of McDonald ATV.

John was known for his love of friends from all walks of life. He cherished being surrounded by his friends for social gatherings, fun times, good food and drink. He had numerous interest and delved into them enthusiastically ranging from motorcycles and ATVs, hunting, boating, cooking and learning to play Polo.

John is survived by his son, John Jason McDonald; his ex-wife, Stephanie Swann; his partner, Robin Mathews; his brother-in-law, Doyle Bennett; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of lifelong friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Ron; and his sister, Bobbie Bennett.

Visitation will be from 2:00 to 2:45pm on June 1st at Smith Little Rock Funeral Home, 8801 Knoedl Ct. in Little Rock followed by a memorial service. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to St. Jude, an organization he felt strongly about.
