John Powell

John Marcus Powell, Jr., age 87, of Little Rock Arkansas, passed away Tuesday, December 20, 2016 at Hospice Home Care. He was born May 2, 1929 in Little Rock, Arkansas, to the late Beatrice Powell and the late John M. Powell, Sr. John grew up in Little Rock and attended and graduated from Central High, University of Arkansas, and Princeton University for his Master's degree in architectural science. He was a self-employed architect and freelance artist for most of his working life until retirement in his early 70s.

John served in the U.S. Air Force for two years as an Air Force fighter pilot, flying some of the first jet fighters during the Korean War. He received commendations from the Air Force during his service for landing and saving his plane and crew in an un-powered jet fighter after losing power during flight.

John was preceded in death by his mother, Beatrice Powell and his father, John M Powell, Sr. He is survived by his sons, Marc C. Powell of Dallas Texas and Jeffrey Thomas Powell of Little Rock; the boys' mother, Patricia Anne Covington of Little Rock; brother, David Powell of Houston Texas; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

John loved his family, children, and grandchildren as well as painting, writing poetry, reading books, fishing, and sailing.

A celebration of John's life is scheduled at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 4th at Little Rock Funeral Home, 8801 Knoedl Ct. (NW corner I-630 and Barrow Rd.). Please come and bring your memories and stories about John.
