John Edward Gillin, 62, of Sherwood, passed away February 7, 2012. John retired in 2007 after taking extreme pride and joy in his work as a substance abuse counselor for over 25 years. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War era. John was proud of his time in the Army and in his later years volunteered his time at Ft. Roots VA. His ability to reach others at a time of need was truly uncanny. Although he may at first be considered "rough around the edges," he knew how to reach through to the heart of what was needed most - those that were hurting and in need. John will be missed the most by his family, but his absence in life and this area will be felt.
He was preceded in death by his step-father, Joe Thompson, Sr. and his mother, Eveline Cobb Gillin Thompson. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Lora Barnes Gillin; daughters, Eveline Gillin Kent and husband, Ben of Little Rock, Arkansas and Mary Gillin Crawford and husband, Brandon of Fayettteville, Arkansas; brothers, Bobby Becannon and Mike Becannon, both of California, and Joe Thompson, Jr. of Oklahoma; sisters, Joy Bierle and Ruth Smith and husband, James, also of California; a host of friends and his pets, Jake, Bear, and Gabby.
Our heartfelt thanks to all our family members and friends who have given us support, prayers, kindness and concern throughout this difficult process. We love each and every one of you!
