John Welch Furqueron, age 94, of Arkadelphia, passed away Thursday, June 26, 2014. The oldest of eight sons, he was born November 25, 1919 in Fouke, Arkansas to Ethel Welch Furqueron and Marshall Tillman Furqueron.
He graduated from Fouke High School and Ouachita Baptist College. While at Ouachita, he excelled in basketball, baseball and track. He was the 1948 recipient of the Neil Martin Trophy given each year by the Arkansas Amateur Athletic Association to their choice of the most Outstanding Amateur Athlete in the State of Arkansas. He honorably served his country as a 1st Lieutenant in the U. S. Marine Corps during World War II. He retired from Phillips Petroleum Company and was a member of the Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon and an Elder.
He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers, and one grandson, Colin Furqueron. He is survived by his wife of sixty-six years, Charlotte McCaskill Furqueron, and their four children, Ann Furqueron Scotti and husband Frank of Gainesville, Virginia; Medena Furqueron Thurman and husband Jerry of Dallas, Texas; J. Philip Furqueron and wife Cherry of Midland, Texas; and Neil Welch Furqueron and wife Christy of Little Rock, Arkansas; six grandchildren, Kelley Romans, Corey Wessel, Eric Thurman, Hayley Holmes, Cole Furqueron and Connor Furqueron; seven great-grandchildren; and one brother, Arthur Ray Furqueron of Jackson, Michigan.
Graveside services will be at 10:00 AM Saturday, June 28th at Rose Hill Cemetery with Reverend Danny Harmon officiating. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
