John Herbert Allen, 86, of Little Rock, passed away January 7, 2010. Born September 3, 1923 in Little Rock to Lottie Mae Spears and Charles Lusk, he was preceded in death by his parents, step-father, Fred David Allen and his sister, Jessie Jayroe. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Marcella Allen; son, David Allen of Little Rock; daughter and son-in-law, Sandra Kay Allen and Michael Horton of Oakland, Oregon; and a niece, Virginia Jayroe of Sherwood.
John was a combat veteran of WWII, having served in the Marine Corps in the liberation of Guam and the Tinian campaigns of the Pacific Theatre. He was destined for Iwo Jima when he contracted Dengue fever and was sent back stateside.
A lifelong Arkansan, John enjoyed hunting, boating and RVing throughout his life. Active in the U.S. Coast Guard Auxillary, he rose in rank to Commodore of the 2nd Coast Guard District Auxillary Detachment. He was also a Regional Director for Good Sam RV Club, covering a six state area. A man of many talents and skills, he could build or fix almost anything. He retired in 1981 as a service representative for Oakite Products, Inc.
Services will be held on Tuesday, January 12 at 10:30 a.m. at Little Rock Funeral Home, 8801 Knoedl Ct. (NW corner I-630 and Barrow Rd.), officiated by Rev. Ed Simpson. The private inurnment will be at the Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery in North Little Rock. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or Pinnacle Mountain State Park.
