Jessie Scruggs

Jessie Faye Wright Scruggs, 96, died August 19, 2018, at her home in Little Rock. Born March 31, 1922, in Mt. Ida, Arkansas, she was the daughter of Roy and Audie Wright.
Jessie Faye graduated from Mt. Ida High School and earned a bachelor's degree from Henderson State Teachers College, now Henderson State University. In 1944 she married Joe B. Scruggs, Jr. (JB) and the newlyweds began their lives together in Little Rock for medical school. Following moves to North Carolina and Virginia to complete medical training and Army service, they returned to Little Rock where they lived for twenty-three years. In 1975 they moved to Eden Isle in Heber Springs, Arkansas, where Jessie Faye lived for thirty-one years. She returned to Little Rock in 2006 and lived at Parkway Village until her death.

Her greatest earthly joy was her family. Jessie Faye was a dedicated Christian, faithfully attended church and was active in local service organizations. She loved studying the Bible, led groups in Bible Study Fellowship and Explorer's Bible Study, and taught Sunday School classes for most of her life. Jessie Faye enjoyed playing bridge and working crossword puzzles. Her sharp mind and wit never left her even as her physical body failed. She developed many, many cherished friendships during her long life and will be greatly missed by both friends and family.

She was preceded in death by her first husband of forty-one years, Dr. Joe B. (JB) Scruggs, Jr.; her second husband of fifteen years, Doyle Harrelson; her sister, Royce Wright Hicks; and a grandson, Wade Wright Scruggs. Survivors include her sister, Marilyn Wright Danley of Siloam Springs; her children, Dr. Joe B. Scruggs, III, (Margie) of Tulsa, OK, Dr. Jan W. Scruggs (Sandy) of Little Rock, Judith Scruggs Sumner (Glenn) of Knoxville, TN, and James R. Scruggs (Mary) of Conway; her grandchildren, Dr. Jennifer Scruggs (Brandon Thornton) of Little Rock, Rev. Scott Scruggs (Nina) of Bothell, WA, Todd Scruggs (Beth) of Tulsa, OK, Kyle Scruggs of Little Rock, Joe Sumner (Jamie) of Franklin, TN, Dr. Stewart Scruggs of Little Rock, Elizabeth Sumner Thurman (John) of Knoxville, TN, and Dr. Claire Scruggs Truban (Mitchell) of Chattanooga, TN; and eight great-grandchildren, the youngest born on her 95th birthday. She is also survived by her step-children, Patricia Harrelson (Bill Hirst) of Sherwood, Jan Harrelson of Sherwood, and Gary Harrelson of New Orleans.

The family would like to thank all the kind caregivers who participated in her care over the last few years.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 25, 2018, at 11:00 AM in the Chapel at Fellowship Bible Church in Little Rock. The family will be greeting guests after the service.
