Jerry Bryan Van Zandt, 74, of Little Rock, died Friday, September 28, 2007. He was born on December 4, 1932 in Van Buren, Arkansas, the only child of the late Anna Maddy Van Zandt and Thomas Jefferson Van Zandt.
He attended the Van Buren schools and graduated from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, where he was a member of the Fabulous Xi Chapter of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. Mr. Van Zandt was a real estate developer in Fort Smith and Van Buren. During that time, he was elected President of the Southside Rotary Club, served on the Advisory Board of the Westark Council of Boy Scouts and was a Deacon at the First Presbyterian Church in Fort Smith.
Mr. and Mrs. Van Zandt later moved to Eastern Arkansas where Mr. Van Zandt continued work in real estate development. He was a Deacon and an Elder at the First Presbyterian Church in Blytheville, and was an active member of the Blytheville Rotary Club. In 1991, Mr. Van Zandt suffered a stroke and was confined to a wheelchair; subsequently, Mr. and Mrs. Van Zandt moved to Little Rock to be near their children. The last four years of his life were spent at Briarwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. The fellow residents and staff at Briarwood were constantly uplifted by his upbeat attitude and positive approach to life. The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to the staff at Briarwood for their extraordinary care and concern.
He is survived by his wife, Annella Humphreys Van Zandt; a daughter, Victoria Van Zandt Saviers and husband, Robert Mark, of Little Rock; a son, Thomas Link Van Zandt and wife, Robyn Sims, of Fayetteville; four grandsons, Marshall Thomas Saviers of Fayetteville, John Mark Saviers of Little Rock, Ross Carter Van Zandt and John Henry Van Zandt, both of Fayetteville; and a cousin, Jay Willis, of Dallas, Texas.
A gathering for friends will be held on Sunday, September 30, 2007, from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m., at the home of Vicki and Mark Saviers, 8 Edgehill Road. A graveside service will be held at Elmwood Cemetery in Blytheville, Arkansas at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, October 1, 2007. Honorary pallbearers will be Richard Appleton, Bill Bracey, Jr., Ron Clark, Rupert M. Crafton, Mason Day, E. B. Gee, Jr., Bradley D. Jesson, Hubert Mayes, Jr., Dr. Boyd Saviers, Dr. James Saviers, Douglas O. Smith, Jr. and Charles R. Sorrels.
Mr. Van Zandt requested that memorials be sent to the Arkansas Children's Hospital or First Presbyterian Church, 1520 N. 10th Street, Blytheville, AR 72315
