James Smith

James Robert Smith, Jr., a United States Army veteran, died Sunday, September 27, 2015 at the age of 78 after a courageous battle with prostate cancer. James retired at the rank of Staff Sergeant after twenty years of service, being stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky after returning from Viet Nam. James was awarded the Bronze Star, Vietnam Service and Campaign medals, Army Good Conduct Medal, among others acknowledging his faithful and dedicated service to the country he passionately loved.
Bob, as many of his close friends called him, loved all things cars and was an avid fan of the late Dale Earnhardt and Dale Jr. Nascar racing teams. Bob was a meticulous master auto mechanic and spent countless hours loving and supporting the local Rott Rods Car Club and its members he fondly called friends.
Bob was preceded in death by his loving wife, Jane E. Smith of Benton; a sister; two brothers; and many others as would be expected with living a good and long life.
Mr. Smith is survived by his son, James Robert Smith III and wife Janice of Vero Beach, Florida; five daughters, Catherine Fleshman and husband Clifton of Colonial Beach, Virginia, Deborah Smith and husband Phillip of Elizabethtown, Kentucky, Mary Lou Stonesifer and husband John of Benton, Pamela Smith and husband Phillip of Louisville, Kentucky, and Sherry Morris and husband Ricky of Vinegrove, Kentucky; seventeen grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; sister, Joan Breazeal and husband Dick of Orlando, Florida; and other relatives and friends who loved Bob and will miss him always.
Funeral service, officiated by Pastor Eddie Kitchens, will be held at 1:00 P.M., Friday, October 2, 2015 at Smith-Benton Funeral Home, certified Veteran Funeral Care provider, 322 N. Market St., Benton, Arkansas 72015. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service. Burial with military honors following at Pipkin Cemetery.

The Smith family wishes to express sincere and heartfelt gratitude to those who gave of themselves to help make Papaw feel comfortable, loved, and needed after moving to Arkansas from Kentucky. Papaw appreciated every kind deed and word that was given him over the last several years. Melvin and the car club: thank you for your love and friendship, Papaw loved you. Gordon: Thank you for allowing Mr. Smith to work at the bowling alley, you were forever in his memory. The Careys: Thank you. We are family. The Hospice team: Thank you for being true to your mission and calling, you made the difference.
We wish to thank all for the love and friendship through the many years, whether it was business or personal, to our dad and family; we are eternally grateful.
