James B. Merkel was the son of Eunice J. Merkel and Walter J. Merkel. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Faye Merkel, his sister and brother in-law, Gwen and T.C. Smith, and his son in-law Carl J. Chapman. He is survived by his sons James E. Merkel (Debbie), Bobby Merkel (Theresa), and daughter Jeana Chapman. His loving grandson Jay Merkel (Labray) and his great grand daughters Rainey and Rynn Merkel.
James was the owner of Georges Cleaners in NLR/Levy from 1969 to 1990. He was active in the business community and belonged to many NLR business organizations. He was also active in his community, 16 th Section, after his retirement. He as a member of the 16th Section Methodist Church, was on the Board of the 16th Section Cemetery for many years and was one of the original board members of the 16th Section Community Center and was active in its development. Jim loved his community and the people in it, he always tried to help whenever he could.
In his later years he developed a passion for woodworking. A neighbor entered a Ferris wheel that he had made when he was 84 years old. He won first place and best in show. He continued to do this for five consecutive years until his eyesight failed him. He enjoyed making things and giving them to others.
He was a strong, kind, and considerate man who loved his family deeply. In his final years Jim said “I’ve been very fortunate, I’ve lived a good life.” In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the 16th Section Cemetery or the 16th Section Community Center.
