James Mathews

James Dello Mathews, 78, of Maumelle passed away Tuesday, July 26, 2011. He joined the United States Marine Corp at the age of 17. He was in route to Korea when Congress passed a bill stating no one under the age of 18 could be in combat and he was rerouted to Kobe, Japan until his 18th birthday, then he was sent to Korea where he served in the 5th Regiment, 1st Marine Division. He taught at Watts in Los Angeles, while he attended graduate school at the University of Southern California. After returning to Little Rock he worked as a salesman for Addressograph-Multigraph Corporation, attending several Hundred Clubs. He taught at vocational schools after that and then taught at Hall High School for 16 years and retired from McClellan High School. He also taught at J.A. Fair. He loved spending time with his dogs Biscuit and T.J.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Margaret Ann Mathews, of Maumelle; and son, Michael Bradley Mathews and wife Tamara, of Little Rock. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dello and Geanie Mathews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Grant County Museum, 521 Shackleford, Sheridan, Arkansas 72150 or Maumelle Friends of the Animals, P.O. Box 13061, Maumelle, Arkansas 72113.
A private graveside service will be held at a later date at Lost Creek Cemetery, Sheridan, Arkansas. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Thursday at North Little Rock Funeral Home, 1921 Main St., 758-1170. Online obituary and guest registry at www.nlrfh.com.
