James "Jim" L. Hammons, 89, of Cabot went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on August 30, 2022.

He was born July 12, 1933 in Little Rock, Arkansas to the late Otha and Janie Hammons.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Pauline Harbour Hammons, a son, Paul Michael Hammons; grandson Martin Robert Hammons, and a brother, Harold Hammons.

After graduating from Mabelvale High School in 1951, Jim joined the USAF Reserves, serving until 1962.

He became a land surveyor and had a 30-year career with the US Corps of Engineers, being involved in numerous major corp projects throughout the state of Arkansas. He was always eager to share his experiences of surveying for the Greers Ferry Dam, Beaver Lake, and the operation of the Lock and Dam system on the Arkansas River. He was honored to receive the "Suggester of the Year" award in 1977 regarding new mapping project technologies.

Jim also worked for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission for 10 years before retiring where he spent his time volunteering, building wheelchair ramps for people in his community, and serving on the Arkansas Baptist Disaster Relief Team.

Jim enjoyed gardening and was an avid fisherman, often commenting on how thankful he was to have a career where he could enjoy nature.

Jim was a life-long Southern Baptist, always serving in a local church where his career took him.

Those left to cherish his memory are his children, James (Priscilla) Hammons of Champaign, IL, Mark (Sandy) Hammons of Cabot and Miriam Hammons of Jacksonville; grandchildren, Simon (Ashley) Hammons, Jackie (David) Shewmaker, Jennifer (Andy) Bates, Abbie (David) Ritchie and Ashlyn Hammons; and 10 great-grandchildren.
