James Richard Clayton, 81, of North Little Rock was born April 29, 1930 in Tilden, Mississippi to Albert and Martha Welch Clayton and departed this life on July 3, 2011 in North Little Rock, Arkansas after a brief illness.
In the 1950's he served in the United States Army and fought in the Korean War. While in service, he met the love of his life for 57 years, Mary Bell Haney and together they raised two daughters and one "babysitting" daughter, Jennifer Cook-Keyes. He retired as a truck driver from Overnight Transportation.
After retirement, James was able to spend a lot of time with his six grandchildren who were the light of his life. He never missed a Grandparents Day lunch or a school cafeteria Thanksgiving meal. He sat tirelessly at dance recitals and soccer games. His grandchildren would rather stay with grandpa and grandma than to be at home. He loved to work in his yard and had a green thumb. He enjoyed family gatherings, car races, football, wrestling, and "The Young and the Restless".
He was also loved by his church family at Grace Church of the Nazarene in North Little Rock. He loved the Lord and he loved serving his fellow church members. He will always be in the hearts of those who knew him as a kind and gentle soul who loved and cared for everyone.
He is survived by his wife, Mary and daughters Vicki Hosman (Roger) and Karen Ellis (Nathan) of Jacksonville; grandchildren, Hannah, Erin and Ethan Ellis and Evan, Jennifer, and Jillian Hosman and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers; two sisters; and grandson, Clayton Forrest Ellis.
Our family would like to thank Stephanie Rohrer RN for her Home Health Care and Cheryl Woolfe RN for making his passing more peaceful.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m., Thursday at Grace Church of the Nazarene. Burial will be in Edgewood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday at North Little Rock Funeral Home, 1921 Main St., 758-1170. Online obituary and guest registry at www.nlrfh.com.
