James Lowell Chappell, a proud veteran, dedicated worker, and beloved family man, passed away on April 3, 2025, at the age of 73. He was born on December 28, 1951, in Heafer, Arkansas. A graduate of Turrell High School, James exemplified hard work throughout his life, serving as a heavy equipment operator and truck driver. His unwavering determination was evident to all; he did not know the word "quit" and continued to labor diligently right up to the time of his passing.
James served his country honorably in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, a period of his life he held in high regard. This military service was a reflection of his strong character and commitment to his country.
He was married to his loving wife of 37 years, Jane Chappell, with whom he built a life rich in love and laughter in Tyronza, Arkansas. Together, they had two daughters, Christy Reid and Mary Purkiss, who proudly continue to honor his legacy. James was especially close to his grandchildren, Hazel and Scarlett Britton, who affectionately referred to him as "G-Pa."
James' interests were diverse, reflecting his zest for life. He had a passion for the outdoors, often indulging in hunting and fishing. He was an enthusiastic gardener, taking pride in growing corn, tomatoes, peas, and more, and eagerly shared his harvest with family and friends. His dedication to helping local farmers, alongside his camaraderie with friends during Thursday fish fry gatherings, highlighted his warmhearted nature.
James was also an animal lover, adored by his dogs, Dutchess, Blake, Ava, and Aurora., as well as those who have crossed the Rainbow Bridge, Levi and Colonel. His fondness for Western television shows, particularly those featuring his favorite actor, John Wayne, and his enjoyment of various sports brought him joy in his leisure time.
James is survived by his beloved wife, Jane; children, Christy Reid and Mary Purkiss; grandchildren, Hazel and Scarlett Britton; sister, Sue Feemster and husband Don; brothers, David Chappell and Stephen Chappell; alongside many nieces, nephews, family members, and cherished friends who will deeply miss him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James C. "Jiggs" and Inez (White) Chappell; son, Micah Brown; sister, Marilyn Chappell; and father and mother-in-law, Porter and Peggy Davis.
A memorial service to celebrate James' life will be held on April 12, 2025, at Barton Chapel Baptist Church, located at 189 Barton Rd, Tyronza, AR 72386, starting at 11:00 AM. . Friends and family are invited to join together in honoring his memory and sharing their love for this remarkable man.
James Lowell Chappell will be remembered for his many contributions to his community, his commitment to family, and the enduring legacy of love he leaves behind.
