James R. Abbott, 76, of Sherwood, passed from this life on Monday, July 11, 2011. He was born on September 27, 1934 to James Bernie Abbott and Nati Cole in Cabot AR.
Mr. Abbott was very active in his community, serving as Past President of the Local Branch of the International Brotherhood of Electricians, volunteering at Memorial Hospital, Baptist Hospital and the VA Hospital for more than 20 years and supporting the Arkansas Special Olympics. He was a member of Hilltop Baptist Church, retired from the railroad after 43 years of service and served as a Lieutenant in the Air National Guard. He was truly dedicated to his wife and children and was known for his kindness and compassion. He will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Mr. Abbott was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters, Linda Anthony and Mary Edith Talley, one son, and one granddaughter.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife; Girlie Jo Abbott; 2 sons, Richard Abbott and Sherry of Sherwood, AR; and Steve Shearin of Sherwood, AR. 3 daughters; Barbara Akers and Jim of Mabelvale, AR; Libby Perez and Johnny of Delta City, MS; and Stephanie Pollard of Sherwood, AR; 1 sister, Carolyn Pattat of Sherwood, AR, 6 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, best friends J. W. and Ruby Elkins of Cabot, AR and a host of other friends.
Visitation is scheduled for Thursday, July 14, 2011 from 6-8pm at Huson Funeral Home of Sherwood. Graveside services are scheduled for 10am on Friday, July 15, 2011 at Sumner Cemetery with Melburn L. Hill officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Special Olympics of Arkansas, 2114 Main St, North Little Rock, AR 72114 or to a charity of your choice.
