Ida Roberts Fulton, at 92 years joined her husband in heaven on Monday, August 23, 2010. She was born November 29, 1917 in Guntersville, Alabama to M.L. Roberts and Minnie Deavers Roberts.
She was one of 17 children. Her mother was a school teacher and her father was a farmer and stone craftsman. After high school, she worked and put herself through nursing school to become an R.N. Early in her hospital nursing career, she saw a young intern who was red headed, skinny and overworked from the long hours. She pointed to him and told her friend, "I'm gonna marry that boy." She saved cat gut for him to practice tying surgical knots. Her thoughtfulness along with her beauty caught his eye. They dated for one year and she married Dr. Wm. L. Fulton on 12/31/1941. In their 38 years of marriage, she brought him breakfast in bed every morning.
In the 1960's she was stricken with breast cancer in both breasts. After she began to heal she did much to help other women cope with the aftermath of the disease, giving them the tools (broom sticks) and the exercises to regain strength and muscle tone in their upper arms. In October of 1979 she lost the love of her life when he died of a heart attack after seeing his last patient of the day. That afternoon, she had a premonition and was sitting at the kitchen table crying and making out the list of pallbearers when the news came.
Since his passing, her primary enjoyment was watching her grandsons grow. She is survived by her grandsons, Kevin (wife Vicki) Fulton and Brian Fulton of this city; her great-granddaughter Molly who always brought a sparkle to her eye; her caregiver of many years, Michele Breen; her son, Bill Fulton, Jr. (wife Elizabeth) and her daughter Lynn Schriver (husband Jim).
In the past years, she has received excellent care at Woodland Hills Nursing Home in Jacksonville, Arkansas. The family wishes to sincerely thank them.
The family will have a private graveside service. Arrangements by North Little Rock Funeral Home, 758-1170. Online obituary and guest register at www.nlrfh.com.
