H. Dalton Whitt, loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, of Maumelle, AR passed away peacefully on July 11, 2022.
He was preceded in death by his parents Hubert and Ruth Whitt, sisters Rachel Wicker and Kathy Johnson, brothers Stanley Whitt and Freddy Burl Whitt.
Dalton was born to Hubert and Ruth Smith Whitt on March 4, 1932, in Tony, Alabama. He grew up in Alabama and Mississippi, graduating from Gunnison High School, Gunnison, MS in 1950. A good all-around athlete, he played basketball but excelled in football and baseball. Following high school, he enlisted in the US Navy, serving in the Korean War. While in the Navy, he played football and softball on the Navy traveling teams that raised money for war bonds. It was here during an exhibition game with Hollywood movie stars, he was playing first baseman when Marilyn Monroe stayed on first through 2 batters. It was one of his favorite stories and thrills of his life.
He always believed education was the road out of poverty so after being honorably discharged from the Navy in 1954, he began his collegiate education, on a football scholarship to Sunflower Jr College, in Moorhead, MS. He went on to receive a BS degree in accounting from Delta State University, in Cleveland, MS and MBA from Memphis State University, Memphis, TN.
On March 25, 1955, Dalton married the love of his life, Rebecca (Becky) Earp. Together they raised 3 children and enjoyed a life of adventure and travel with their friends Dennis and Paula Morgan. Becky and Dalton loved to dance and were exceptional at the Texas Two Step.
Although he literally worked from the time he was able to plant potatoes and guide a mule, his professional career was what he was most prideful of. He started off as an accountant for Humko Products, in Memphis, decided to try farming in Gunnison, then decided he would try teaching.
This was his passion and the career he retired from 31 years later. His first teaching position was at Northwest Mississippi Jr. College in Senatobia and his second and final position was a 29 year stent as an Accounting Professor at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, AR. During his tenure at ASU, he attained his CPA certification and served as President of the Northeast Arkansas Chapter of Certified Public Accountants along with many other boards and committees. He was especially proud of representing the College of Business on the Faculty Athletic Committee.
After retiring from ASU 1997, Dalton was able to hone his new found favorite pastime, GOLF! He played almost every day with his “group” and was a proud member of the TCC, Trumann Country Club. With his competitive spirit, he really enjoyed playing in golf tournaments, especially with Michael John and his daughter, Mona.
Dalton was an exceptional husband, father and grandfather. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 67 years Becky, his son Duane, daughters Mona (Michael John) Young and Leah (Rick) Sutherland, all of Maumelle, AR. His pride and joy were his granddaughters Ameilia (Will) Douglas of Brisbane, Australia, Shawna (Anthony) Frizzell and Hayley Nichols both of Maumelle, AR. and great grandsons William Dalton Douglas and Gordon Michael Douglas both of Brisbane.
A Celebration of the Life of Dalton Whitt will be held at a yet to be determined date.
