Colonel Henry C. "Hank" Butner (U.S. Army, Retired), 72, of Alexander, passed away July 29, 2011. He was born in Lavergne, Tennessee to John and Jessie Bush Butner, and was a member of Southwest Church of Christ where he served as an Elder for 17 years.
Col. Butner joined the Army on January 31, 1965. He served two tours of duty in Vietnam and, for his valor and gallantry, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, three Bronze Stars, two Purple Hearts, the Air Medal, and many other honors. He retired from active duty on January 23, 1973 and entered the Arkansas Army National Guard where he served for fifteen years and retired as a full Colonel.
He is survived by his wife, Karen Kelton Butner; daughters, Shari Hess and husband, James, and Maria Bean and husband, Robert, both of Little Rock; son, Roger Butner and wife, Chemaine, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; grandchildren, Charlie Hess and Shepard Butner; and sisters, Laura Fetzer of Manchester, Tennessee, Marie Pugh of Dayton, Ohio, Juanita Wallace (Carl) of Ringgold, Georgia, Lurlie Gaston of Chattanooga, Tennessee and Christine Pless, also of Ringgold; and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Ray Butner.
Services will be Friday, August 5 at 10:30 a.m. at Little Rock Funeral Home, 8801 Knoedl Ct. (NW corner I-630 and Barrow Rd.), officiated by Mr. Nick Hamilton. Interment with Military Honors will follow at the Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery in North Little Rock. Visitation will be Thursday evening, August 4 from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
