Helen Chambers

Helen Gwendolyn Chambers, born April 19, 1927, passed away in the early morning of Thursday, January 15, 2015 at Gentiva Hospice in Columbus, Georgia. Her daughter, Gail, was by her side along with the Gentiva Hospice angels.

She was born to Dora Mae Hicks Haltom and Ernest Haltom and was raised on a farm near Arkadelphia in Clark County. At the age of 18, she moved to Little Rock where she met and married her husband, Bill, who preceded her in death in August 1985. She was also preceded by her older brother and her only sibling, Bernice (Bernie) Haltom.

The four children are Gail Franz of Midland, Georgia, Gary J. Chambers of Shawnee, Kansas, Allan B. Chambers, who preceded her in 1998, and Cecelia Ann Rhodes of Mayflower, Arkansas. Grandchildren are Julia Helen Franz, currently of Helena, Montana, Jason C. Franz of Marietta, Georgia, Shannon Rhodes of Mayflower, Krystal Rhodes of Conway and Chris Chambers of Jacksonville. There are two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind sisters-in-law, Betty Ann Connelley and Mary Chambers.

Helen was a loving mother who always enjoyed having her family together, especially for holidays. She had a tiny kitchen, but she managed to prepare exceptional meals. She was always a two-entrée cook with both pot roast and ham, turkey and ham, or other combinations, with all of the other side dishes, salads and desserts. Nobody ever was hungry at Mama's house.

After her children were all in school, she began to use her culinary skills as a cafeteria manager/planner in various Little Rock public schools. She really enjoyed the students and her co-workers.

She was always the caregiver and advocate for her husband, Bill, during his illness and untimely death, and for her son, Allan, during his lifetime illness. She was always there for her extended family and friends. She has been a blessing for us all. She loved her friends, Reba, Marguerite, Mary and Imogene. And she loved to travel, whether it was just to Callaway Gardens in Georgia or to Europe in the 1980s. She was a sweet spirit with sparkling green eyes.
