Frederic Hjalmar Floodstrand, 78, of Little Rock, passed away November 18, 2018. He was born in Negaunee, Michigan to George and Lila Huhta Floodstrand and was of the Bahai faith.
Preceded in death by his parents, a brother George K. Floodstrand and a sister, Mary Jo Jarvis, he is survived by his wife, Utimia Floodstrand, his daughter, Laila M. Harris and son-in-law, Jurmon Harris, all of Little Rock; sister, Lois L. Floodstrand of Wisconsin; and three granddaughters, Genesis, Eden and Halo Harris.
Fred was a caring, loving husband, father, and grandfather. Growing up in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan he started on his quest for truth. He studied physics at Michigan Tech to later obtain his doctorate in physics from New Mexico State. He was able to work for such companies during the Space Race of the 1960's that contributed to NASA's success. However, during this time he realized that his knowledge of physics still had not satisfied all of his questions. He was raised in the Lutheran church and loved and appreciated that spiritual education very much. But again he needed more.
He began to visit various religious organizations throughout the United States and Europe. He eventually rediscovered the Baha'i Faith in Alabama. Interestingly, his sister had purchased a Baha'i book years prior for their literature loving mother. Fred began to study this intently. After a few years he declared himself a Baha'i. He wanted to serve humanity so he traveled to Guatemala as a pioneer which is similar to a missionary. There he met Utimia Veliz at a Baha'i gathering. They were married in Guatemala and had one child, Laila. They eventually moved to the United States where he taught at two different campuses, Stout in Wisconsin and Arkansas State University Beebe.
He influenced many lives as an educator for almost 30 years. He loved teaching and sharing the Baha'i Faith. He loved the outdoors, hiking, cycling, and swimming. Fred also continued to deepen his spiritual knowledge throughout his life and still could recite short prayers even with his suffering of dementia.
Frederic Hjalmar, you will be missed but, God willing, we will see you again!
