Evelyn Gillis Kiernan

David Evelyn Gillis Kiernan of Little Rock, Arkansas, passed away on January 12, 2023, at St. Vincent Infirmary at the age of 94. She was born January 5, 1929, in Tull, Arkansas, the daughter of the late David Esco Gillis and Sammie Evelyn Crowson Gillis. She graduated from Bauxite High School and attended Draughon's Business School in Little Rock. She was a member of St. James United Methodist Church in Little Rock where she was an active member of the Agape Sunday School Class having served as president and pianist. She was a past president of the St. James United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the Gilbert Marshall D.A.R.


She had a career as a secretary, having been employed at Tulane University in New Orleans, Emory University in Atlanta; Candler General Hospital in Savannah and Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department in Little Rock where she retired in 1991.


She is survived by one daughter, Evelyn Ann "Evie" Kiernan of Little Rock; one son, Thomas A. Kiernan III and wife Sheri of Plano, Texas; four grandchildren, Michael Schuman of Largo, Florida, Adam Birkner and wife Lesly of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas, Matthew Kiernan of Martinsville, Indiana, and Amy Kiernan Monaco and husband Logan of Dallas, Texas; step-grandchildren, Sean and Roman Venegas of Plano, Texas, and Regan Birkner and wife Laura and children Caroline and Adrian of Barnhart, Missouri; two brothers, James F. "Jim" Gillis and wife Audrey of Longview, Texas and Mark G. Gillis and wife Jane of Tull, Arkansas as well as nieces, nephews and many dear friends. She is predeceased by her beloved husband, Thomas A. Kiernan, Jr.; her parents; and one grandson, Ronald Lee Schuman, Jr.


A graveside service will be held on Saturday, January 28, 2023, at 11am at Ebenezer Cemetery, Tull, Arkansas. The family requests no food or flowers. Donations can be made in her memory to either of these organizations:
