Evelyn Fitch

Evelyn Fitch, age 102, of Texarkana, Texas, formerly of Glenwood, passed away peacefully at the Cornerstone Healthcare Facility in Texarkana on Sunday, August 13, 2023.

She was born on October 9, 1920, in Star City, the daughter of Homer and Patty C. Ligon.  

Evelyn was the first Elberta Peach Queen in Pike County in 1936.  She attended Henderson State Teachers College in Arkadelphia.  After attending college, she worked for Chicago Southern airlines in Little Rock, where she met and married, Gordon Fitch.  Evelyn lived many years in Glenwood, where she had a career with the United State Forest Service.  She and her husband, Gordon together raised three children in Glenwood.  After her husband's death in 2007 she moved to Texarkana for her remaining fifteen years.  Her family and friends were the most important part of her life.  Evelyn was an avid reader, bridge player, enjoyed gardening and daily walks on the treadmill.  She was a loyal and faithful servant of God which showed in her everyday life.  

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon Bentley Fitch; her son, James Bentley Fitch; her parents; and her sister, Ruth Ligon Ward.

Evelyn is survived by her two daughters, Patty Martin Skelton of Lexington, Missouri, and Mary and her husband, Buddy King of Texarkana, Texas; her grandchildren and their spouses, Jim Martin, Chyra Worthington, Sharon Printy, Julie and John Sheerman, Don and Marisol Murray, and Bentley and Jennifer Fitch.  In 1969, her family was blessed with the addition of grandchildren, Cathie Martin (Jim Milkey), Mary Kozlowski (Jim), and Robin Hanley (John); seventeen great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren, and several extended family members, and a host of wonderful friends.

A visitation will be held at 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM, Wednesday, August 16, 2023, in the Smith Family Funeral Home Chapel, Glenwood, 209 North Third Street, Glenwood, Arkansas 71943.

Graveside services will be held immediately following the visitation at 2:30 PM, in the Glenwood Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jim Martin, Don Murray, Bentley Fitch, Grayson Worthington, John Sheerman, Chris Hays and David Grubbs.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Glenwood Methodist Church, P.O. Box 1287, Glenwood, Arkansas 71943 or to the Glenwood Cemetery Fund, P.O. 2043, Glenwood, Arkansas 71943.
