Ervin Laverne (Tommy) Thompson died April 8, 2011 of Little Rock after a wonderful life filled with love, laughter, hard work and an intense caring for those he loved and those in need. He was born in Wichita Falls,Texas on September 29, 1919 to William Henry and Alene Thompson.
He was predeceased by his parents, first wife, Orma Le Shelton Thompson, daughter, Sandra Louise Thompson Majick, granddaughter, Elizabeth Ann Thompson, and also by his brother, Preston Thompson and sister, Betty Sue Gardner.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Elizabeth Jones Thompson; his son, Larry L. Thompson and wife, Margaret; grandchildren, Mike Cory Majick (Cindy), Mark David Majick (Kim), Marla (Ben) Daugherty, Jennifer Lynn (Alan) Clark and Thomas P. ( Angela) Thompson; and great-grandchildren, Sydney, Eli, Katie, and Luke Majick, Casey, Heather, Connor, Joshua, Brenden, Mary and Declan Daugherty, Julian and Annabel Thompson and Lana Clark.
Tommy was a graduate of Phillips University (B.A., M.A.) and Christian Theological Seminary. He served as minister of Christian Churches (Disciples of Christ) in East Union, Indiana, Martinsville, Indiana, El Dorado, Arkansas, Warren, Ohio and Mission, Texas. Following those ministries, he served as Regional Minister of the Christian Church in Pennsylvania and as Regional Minister of the Northwest Area of Missouri. He also served as director of Public Relations and Development for Christian Theological Seminary and as Secretary of the Conference of Regional Ministers and Moderators. In retirement, among many other things, he served as marshal of the Palmview Golf Course in McAllen, Texas where he loved to play and was an excellent golfer, often lending his expertise to those asking for help.
A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, April 10, at 3:00 p.m. at First Christian Church, 1500 Mississippi, with a reception following. Rev. Kevin Robbins will lead the service. Interment will be in St. Joseph, Missouri at a later date.
