Era Mitchell

Mrs. Era P. Mitchell of Magnolia, Arkansas was born March 25, 1921, and died at age 90 on August 20, 2011, in Little Rock, Arkansas after a brief illness. Era married Edward V. Mitchell in September of 1945 and he predeceased her in July of 1982. They were introduced by "one of the Michael girls" in Homer while Ed was on leave during World War II. The youngest of nine children of Louie and Alice Enloe Purgerson, she is survived by one sister, Mrs. Exa Ross of Columbia, South Carolina, formerly of Lockesburg and Texarkana. She is also survived by nieces, Tyna H. Moore and husband, Jim of Little Rock, Leila Meacham and husband, Dick of San Antonio, Texas; nephews, Bob Ross and wife, Kathleen of Columbia and Jim Purgerson of Russell, Kentucky; several great nieces and nephews, and many great-great nieces and nephews.
Although never blessed with their own, Era and Ed dearly loved the children of her family and of their friends. They immensely enjoyed their lives together, making many friends and having lots of fun. Their greatest joy for several years was being Super Hog Fans and attending all Arkansas Razorback football games no matter where played, getting to know many other fans like them who lived around the State, along with coaches and some players. Era was known by her family, her friends and even acquaintances for enjoying giving more than receiving, and she hardly ever forgot her friends' special occasions or those who were in grief or ill. Bringing a smile to someone's face was her delight. She never drove a car, but after being widowed, she still managed just fine by walking where she needed to go or catching a ride with a buddy.
A lifelong Methodist, Era was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church of Magnolia and the Clegg Sunday School Class, both of which she loved dearly. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to First UMC of Magnolia, 320 West Main Street, Magnolia, AR 71753.
Honoring her request, a simple memorial service will be held in the chapel on the grounds at Arlington Cemetery in Homer, Louisiana on Saturday, August 27 at 10:30 a.m., with Reverend Larry Kelso and Reverend Barbara Lewis officiating. She will be interred beside her beloved Edward and near many other family members who have preceded her. There will be an open visitation at Lewis Funeral Home of Magnolia, 420 N. Jackson Street, Magnolia, AR 72751, on Friday, August 26 from noon to 5:00 p.m.
