Elsie May Johnson Bounds

Elsie May Johnson Bounds, better known as “Jonnie”, 81, went home to be with our Lord and Savior on February 7, 2025. Jonnie was born at home in Hickory Plains, Arkansas on October 21, 1943.

Jonnie graduated from Des Arc High School and studied education at Arkansas Tech University on a basketball scholarship. Following college, she entered the United States Marine Corp reaching the rank of Captain. Jonnie also received two master’s degrees from the University of Mississippi and taught Physical Education in Mississippi for three years.

Jonnie is preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Dr. William (Bill) Theodore Bounds, Jr. and her son, Joseph Theodore Bounds. Her siblings, Harvey Johnson & Laura Lee Johnson Kimbrough also proceeded her in death.

Jonnie and Bill were active charter members of Woodland Heights Baptist Church. Their love for Jesus was most important in their lives and their church home was the center of their lives. She was a joyous member of the church choir, she treasured her Sunday School Class, she often served by teaching with Bill in Vacation Bible School and loved serving in Mother’s Day Out. They both went on short term Mission Trips from Woodland Heights to Honduras serving together as they fit people with eyeglasses.

Jonnie was an enthusiastic Razorback fan. Even her ring tone on her phone reflected her loyalty.  She took every opportunity to cheer for her Razorbacks.

A carry over from her Marine days, Jonnie always wanted to be wearing “a cover” (hat) as a good Marine always does when in uniform. Her collection of hats of various shapes and colors is proof of her fondness. Jonnie was active in the Dale W. Langford Marine Corps League-DET1323

Jonnie was quite an artist excelling in Tole Painting & Pottery. Her family and friends enjoyed being gifted with pieces of her art.

Jonnie and Bill enjoyed being members of the Conway Lions Club, serving their community. Jonnie was active in the Dale W. Langford Marine Corps League-DET1323, serving as Chaplin. She was also an avid “Sugar Bear” fan. (University of Central Arkansas women’s basketball team)

Jonnie took joy in going to Bible Study at Brookdale Senior Assisted Living Community (lead by Dr. Larry White, Pastor at Woodland Heights Baptist Church), and Be Fit Classes, playing Bingo and Arts and Crafts provided by Brookdale Senior Assisted Living Community that has been her home for the past three years.

A Celebration of Life for Jonnie will be held at Woodland Heights Baptist Church at a future date. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating Bibles through the Gideon's International.
