A Tall Tree Has Fallen
Ellery David Steele was welcomed into the loving arms of Jesus on April 19, 2023. Born on July 22, 1950 to Edwin and Hazel Steele, Ellery was 72 years old when he left us after a long battle with cancer. He and his wife, Alice Marie Steele, had a wonderful marriage for 52 years and promised each other they would love the other till the end of time and beyond.
Ellery was predeceased by his parents; his brother, Carrol Steele and his beloved Sophie. He is survived by his wife, Alice; sister, Sharon Davis (Richard); sister- in-law, Judy Bowman (Darrell); nieces, Margo Anderson (Gary), Jennifer Davis, Megan Davis, Kimberly Webb (Russ), Kathy Steele and Suzanne Steele; nephews, Joshua W. Davis (Kim), Larry Bowman (Roni), and Timothy Steele; fourteen great nieces and nephews; one great-great niece.
Ellery worked for Yellow Freight for over thirty years until he retired. He was proud of his strong work ethics and was awarded a certificate for driving one million miles without any accidents by the State of Arkansas which he cherished.
Ellery enjoyed many hobbies. He was a member of the Billy Thompson Hunting Club for twenty-five years where he enjoyed not only hunting deer, but also the camaraderie of his friends at the camp, telling wild tales and jokes and pulling pranks on each other. He loved gardening in his yard and woodworking in his shop. Many of his family members and friends have been blessed with one of his handmade pieces.
After he retired, Ellery and Alice loved to travel and take cruises. They enjoyed the cruising life where they would make an occasional visit to the casino.
Family members have described Ellery as being bigger than life, and not just in stature. His personality was large and his sense of humor enormous. Most of the jokes he told can’t be mentioned here, if you know what we mean.
Ellery will be tremendously missed by his wife, family and many friends. In lieu of flowers or donations, we ask that you take a moment to hug your spouse, child, grandchild, and friend, and tell them you love them. Time waits for no one.
