Edith Horn Small, age 91, of Glenwood, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 10, 2023, at her home surrounded by her loving family.
She was born on October 8, 1931, in Glenwood, the daughter of Jess Lee Horn and Rebecca Jane Lowery Horn. On March 29, 1957, she was married to the love of her life, Leo Small, who preceded her in death on February 15, 2014. She was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Harold Horn and Jess Lee Horn, Jr.; one sister, Maxine Johnson; and six sisters-in-law.
Edith was Valedictorian of the Kirby High School Class of 1950, and graduated from Henderson State in 1953, with a degree in education. Following obtaining her degree, Edith returned home and began her teaching career at Kirby, as well as Glenwood and Cutter Morning Star. Because Edith always had a heartfelt love for children, she soon became a well-loved teacher that many of all ages still share their memories of her and her wonderful teaching skills. She was an active member of the West Central Arkansas Retired Teachers Association and loved to be the “door opener” for lunch meetings even at 90 years old. Edith was also a faithful member of the Grace Baptist Church in Glenwood. She enjoyed shopping in Hot Springs, working in her flowers and gardening, and since it was so hard for her to decide which she loved the most, she would often do all three in the same day.
Edith was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who cherished and loved her family with all her heart. One of the fondest memories her family enjoys sharing is of her love for men’s neckties. While her sons never liked to wear a necktie, unless it was a necessary situation, she would always bring to their attention anyone who was wearing one and how nice they looked. Her love for neckties has remained a funny story her family continues to enjoy sharing about their precious mother. There is no doubt Edith will truly be missed by all who had the joy of knowing and loving her.
She is survived by her two sons, Mark Small of Glenwood, who became her loving caregiver for over nine years, which allowed her to stay at home and enjoy her life, and Jeff and Jeanette Small of Atkins; her grandchildren, Heather Albright and Heath Kizer; her great-grandchildren, Athan Kizer, Reid Albright and Kirby Albright; her special niece, who was also her dedicated caregiver, Debbie Horn of Glenwood; her sister-in-law, Jo Hawkins of Washington, DC; her special friend, Katherine Williams of Glenwood; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members; and a host of wonderful friends.
Services will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, May 13, 2023, in the Smith Family Funeral Home Chapel, Glenwood with Bro. James Owens and Scott Smith officiating.
Visitation will be held Saturday, 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM, prior to the services at the funeral home.
Interment will be in the Mount Tabor Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Eddie Bright, Stan Taylor, Gary Holmes, Roy Rogers, Mike Funderburk and Athan Kizer.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in memory of Edith to the Mount Tabor Cemetery Association Fund, 1501 Dollar Road, Glenwood, Arkansas 71943 or to the County Line Cemetery Association Fund, 3409 Center Ridge Road, Amity, Arkansas 71921.
