Dr. Tom E. Ward, 57, of Sulphur Springs, Texas, formerly of Arkadelphia, went to be with his Lord on April 2, 2007 at his home. He was born in 1949 in McAlester, Oklahoma to Bill and Thelma Himes Ward.
Tom and Judith Lynn Hasley were married in 1970. They had a son, Aaron Hasley Ward. Tom was a loving husband and father; and was passionate about his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and enjoyed worshipping and serving Him. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Sulphur Springs, where he had taught Sunday School.
Tom was an Oklahoma Track and Cross Country State Champion 1965-1966. He received a B.A. and a Masters in Education from Ouachita Baptist University, and his Doctorate of Education from The University of Arkansas. His passion for research, teaching and coaching led him to the University of Science and Art of Oklahoma (U.S.A.O.); University of Texas at Arlington; Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas; and Texas A & M University, Commerce, where he retired in 2004. He coached Cross Country and Track and Field at the high school and college levels.
He was also a member of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), The American and Texas Alliances of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD and TAHPERD), AAHPERD Research Consortium Fellow, Coordinator of TAMU-Commerce Exercise Science Lab, Coordinator of TAMU-Commerce Health, Kinesiology and Sports Student Graduate Programs.
He is survived by his loving wife, Lynn; a son, Aaron and his wife, Molly of Dallas; two brothers, Jim Ward of Stillwater, OK and Kelly Ward of McAlester, OK; and one sister, Audie Chandler of Blanchard, OK.
Funeral Services will be at 10 AM, Wednesday, April 4, 2007 at the First Baptist Church of Sulphur Springs, with Rev. Fred Lewis and Dr. Bob McCartney officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM, Tuesday, April 03, 2007, at West Oaks Funeral Home.
Interment will be at 5:00 PM, Wednesday, April 4, 2007 in Richwoods Cemetery, Arkadelphia, Arkansas.
