A. Douglas Kendall of Little Rock passed away March 22, 2016 at age 87. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Marlene Kendall; son, Robert Carter; daughter, Shalah Kendall Joiner; grandchildren, John Carter, Lynnanne Carter, Thad Carter, Nina Carter, Jay Joiner, Melissa Joiner, and Jolie Joiner; great-grandchildren, Nicholas Elliot, Eva Carter, and Macy Carter; and sister-in-law, Barbara Kendall. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Missy Kendall.
Doug graduated Cum Laude from the University of Arkansas with a degree in Industrial Engineering. He served in the Navy in World War II, and as a Pilot and an Instrument Flight Instructor in the Army during the Korean War.
His love of flying led to several jobs where, in addition to his managerial duties, Doug served as a private pilot flying twin-engine planes. He went on to work for the Little Rock School District, retiring as Director of Plant Services.
After playing tennis recreationally as a teenager, Doug found a true passion for the sport in the 1970s and began entering local competitions. He was a member of the Little Rock Athletic Club Senior Tennis Team which, in 1993, became the first tennis team from Little Rock to ever win a national championship. He continued to play tennis multiple times a week until his 80s.
After retirement, Doug spent much of his time with his grandchildren, sharing his love of books and sports with them. He taught his grandchildren to swim and waterski, coached little league and t-ball games, and cheered at numerous sporting events and dance recitals.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Valley Ranch Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for all of their love and compassionate care.
