Dorothy Larrieu

Dorothy Ambort Larrieu, 95, of Little Rock, left us Thursday, December 6, 2007. She was born April 14, 1912 with her twin sister, Helen, the daughters of Leo J. Ambort, Sr. and Mabel Peacock Ambort who had a small farm in the Fourche Dam area east of Little Rock.
Dorothy became a talented beautician , and with Henry Downs, opened a combined barber and beauty shop on Louisiana St. across from Kempner/Arkansas Theater. In 1935, she married Edward M. Larrieu, moved to New Orleans and spent the Depression years as a stylist at Maison Blanche on Canal Street, styling the hair of some of Louisiana's most beautiful women.
Returning to Little Rock when World War II began, she became the first woman to own and operate a business on Main Street, opening "The Post" Beauty Salon to serve the many military women during the war. Dorothy was an early pioneer in health foods and nutrition, and was a practitioner of reflective massage to many who experienced her healing touch.
Dorothy is survived by her son, Lane M. Larrieu, grandson, Darrin Real and wife, Heather of Houston, Texas, and great-grandson, Ian Real. She had three brothers and four sisters, Joe Ambort, Leo Ambort, Jr., Paul Ambort, Earnestine Ambort, Helen A. McPherson McElyea, Frances A. Cearley and Marion A. White.
