Doris Jean Chapen Fox Powell, 79, of Maumelle, passed away January 20, 2011. She was born in Lavaca, Arkansas to Silas and Missie Escue Chapen and was retired from a career in nursing.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Larry Fox and Charles Powell, and siblings, Cecil, Luke, Joe and Aline. She is survived by her sisters, Maggie Lollis and Rae Bradley of Alma, Arkansas; her daughter, Lee Ann Edmonson of Maumelle; son, Steve Fox and his wife, Cindy of Vilonia; grandsons, Chase Fox and Trey Fox; granddaughters, Lucy Edmonson Henson and her husband, J.W., and Lana Edmonson; and great-granddaughter, Mckinlee Henson.
She grew up in Alma in a house full of siblings. She was a great basketball player for her high school, was a member of the band and worked at the local movie theatre.
Her caring personality led her to a career in nursing. Her passion for cooking was enjoyed by her family and friends. Many of her recipes are still used frequently by loved ones. Jean loved all hobbies, including sewing, knitting, crocheting and cross-stitching. Her granddaughters grew up with an assortment of homemade clothes. She loved dancing and spending time with her friends, but most of all, she loved to be with her family.
Jean's final days were spent surrounded by her devoted daughter, son and grandchildren. Her gentle smile could melt the hearts of anyone around her. She was an incredible example of a human being: kind, thoughtful, loving and very giving of herself to all people who came into her presence.
Although Jean's illness made her appear frail, she possessed strength, perseverance and the ability to overcome incredible odds and physical challenges. With her courage she lead us to believe that each day is a blessing and an opportunity to change one's self and others for the better.
With Jean's passing, we remind ourselves and others that her life is one to be celebrated. Although we will miss her dearly everyday, she will remain forever in our hearts. Through her teachings about life, we are able to create wonderful memories and it has been a privilege to be loved by her as her family and friends.
