Donald "Don" Leon Byrd, of Conway, AR, passed away on June 18th, 2023, at the age of 86. His final moments were spent on Father's Day, surrounded by his three children. Born on May 30th, 1937, in Fairmount, Illinois, to the late Mary Louise and James Bee Byrd, he was the youngest of three siblings and held cherished memories of his rural upbringing.
Following his high school education, he pursued studies at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. In 1960, he enlisted in the Air Force, as an airman and Chaplain's assistant. His military service took him to many exciting places, both domestically and internationally. Following his honorable discharge, Don's thirst for knowledge led him to Central Oklahoma State University, where he received his Bachelors’ degree in 1969.
Don embarked on a career with General Electric Company, which led him on a journey from Illinois to Cleveland, then Cincinnati to Rhode Island. Upon retirement, he settled in Conway, Arkansas, where he resided for the last 26 years. Don, always pragmatic, was rarely seen without his trusty pocket knife and handkerchief. He was proud to serve as a Deacon during his time at Landmark Baptist Church (Cincinnati). However, his most cherished treasure in life was his beloved wife, "Patti,” Patricia Lee (Elbert) to whom he was married for 62 years until his death.
Don leaves behind a legacy through his three children: Chantel (Byrd) O'Neill of Narragansett, RI (Spouse, Kevin O'Neill); Jason Byrd of Cincinnati, OH (Spouse, Rhonda (Gray) Byrd); and Holly (Byrd) Mills of Narragansett, RI (Spouse, Barry Mills). He was also a proud grandfather to eight grandchildren: Ethan, Callan, Rory, and Aidan (O'Neill); Jackson and Pierson (Byrd); Dante and Ruby (Mills).
Don's passing is mourned by his sisters-in-law, Julianne (Elbert) Brown and Rebecca "Becky" Elbert. Preceding him in death were his firstborn child, Jon Anthony Shawn Byrd, as well as his brother Martin Smith Byrd and sister Beverly (Byrd) Lewis.
Don’s faith journey was marked by a thirst for knowledge and deeper understanding. An avid reader with an insatiable appetite for books, Don was always sharing a favorite book with loved ones. Throughout his life, he was a prolific letter writer as well, known for his lengthy missives that often required additional postage.
As we say farewell, we cherish the love he shared with us and the indelible impact he made on our lives. Don's absence will be felt, but his memory will endure.
Don’s services were private per his wishes. In his honor, please contribute to a charity of your choice, and do an act of kindness for a person in need.
